This is particularly useful for languages where fonts need to cover a very wide range of characters - typically when an ideographic writing system is used (e.g. in Chinese and Japanese) - downloading a multi-mega bytes font for a page makes downloadable fonts unpractical.

Incremental Font Transfer focuses on a new dedicated server-side protocol, PatchRequest, based on the optimal results it demonstrated in the initial research reported in the Progressive Font Enrichment report w3.org/TR/PFE-evaluation/

Work on re-using HTTP Range requests is also underway, as an easier to deploy solution to the same problem
