HTML5 is superseded, long live HTML5.2!
It has taken a while, but @W3C has formally moved most old HTML specs to superseded. Including HTML 5.0 - w3.org/TR/2018/SPSD-html5-20… But not HTML 5.1, although last year's HTML 5.2 Recommendation is closer to today's reality. Maybe when we release HTML 5.3 later this year...

The API is available in @firefox v60+ and in @googlechromedev v65+ behind a flag, with support limited to USB U2F tokens at the moment. The spec is developed at github.com/w3c/webauthn/

#WebAuthn enables strong authentication using securely-held public keys with user content, rather than #passwords - given how fragile passwords are, this is a pretty big deal.
