Wait, what is WCAG? Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. WCAG 2 has been the gold standard for accessibility worldwide (you've probably heard of AA or AAA compliance). But the guidelines were published in December 2008 and received their first update in 2018.

In 10 years, technology changed and the needs of people with disabilities changed. WCAG 2 is hard to parse, often ambiguous, and lacks mobile guidelines in a mobile-first world.

WCAG 3.0 is intended to solve these problems. It covers apps, AR/VR technologies, and assistive technology tools. The new guidelines are not going to be backward compatible with WCAG 2.0, so expect companies to start adopting the new accessibility standard.

“WCAG 3 is not expected to be a completed W3C standard for a few more years. And, for at least several years after WCAG 3 is finalized, WCAG 3 will not supersede WCAG 2 and WCAG 2 will not be deprecated.” More here: w3.org/WAI/wcag3#timeline ~Shawn (fellow oxford comma lover :-)
