We are very very early in people's understanding of how the blockchains work.
you can plug your hardware wallet in, thus making it temporarily an online wallet, but if the wallet at the other end is offline the payment will fail. So you have to message your friend to tell them to plug their wallet in. That's the equivalent of a SWIFT message.
