Not using database-specific features in the name of portability is a very common mistake.
Database portability makes sense for frameworks or template products. End products rarely switch DBs. I only had to do that twice in 17 years.

It's incredible when you stop and think about it: FB is one of the biggest users of push notifications generally, and *web* push notifications specifically, yet their "browser" breaks a feature they themselves view as critical *for everyone else*
