To me, there’s an incredible amount of bullshit in that space that defrauds investors, furthers scams, and hurts the folks who actually want to pursue some of the technically interesting new options it creates.

Yet its purpose is reduced to speculation, Ponzi schemes, and scams, and everyone who looks at it for genuinely interesting purposes is lumped together with the criminals and their naive victims.
I’m not saying that is not happening. I’m arguing it’s not the purpose Bitcoin or Ethereum have been created for, and they have value beyond that, at least potentially. And it’s not the motivation for everyone who’s involved.
I’ve been hearing those arguments (and have been clinging onto that hope) for a few years now. As of now, it’s still just vaporware AFAICT. I still hope you’ll be able to remove the future tense from your statements some time soon.
