I really like the innovation in blockchain and believe Bitcoin is a positive disruption, but even I find it hard to justify the energy consumption with its current benefits

What are benefits of bitcoin? It certainly was an interesting idea but afaik tell it completely failed except as a target for betting.

Globally decentralized publicly accessible trustless yet trustable digital money sounds like a good thing to me.

With the emphasis on "current" one tends to agree. But I tend to think of it (the energy consumption) as a necessary feature for an unbreakable infrastructure of trust. In the future, it could even turn out to be the socially single most important form of energy consumption.

Agreed, I’m also still hopeful this will eventually justify things

Yes but what can you buy now after so many years of existence? So far it is used as a speculative asset and it is widely known for that reason alone. I wish it was otherwise but it is not. Hopefully there is more to blockchain than bitcoin but that remains to be seen
