The fact that Markdown won over REstructuredText, org-mode, and other similarly superior formats is quite depressing. It is what it is though.

Markdown won on standard worse-is-better principles - 80%+ of Markdown is just how we were already writing plain text. Every other markup language is new markup to learn to write and parse, a fairly minor win over just using HTML.
