The worst candidates I interviewed were the ones that just studied CS for career purposes and had no interest otherwise :)

I agree a CS degree is not a necessity. I have never seen anyone who did worse because they had one, though.

Interesting way to think about it. I definitely wanted to go to university. Maybe there are people who definitely don鈥檛 want to go to university and it鈥檚 great that they can have an IT carrer, too.

i remember a friend of mine did not get invited to interviews by several IT consulting companies in the early 2000s because he did not have a cs degree. sorted out by hr upfront although he had several years of experience. thus, at least for "bad times" a degree might be useful

A job interview is not about the interviewee getting a job. It is about seeing whether there is a mutual fit. Maybe it is better to not work for a company that judges people by degrees?
