I think our industry really lost something when we abandoned the whole 4GL idea, despite its flaws. Think of all the possibly badly engineered, but really useful apps built with Access, Forms, Powerbuilder, Uniface, etc. What did we replace them with – Java? I don’t think so

Salesbros for sure. But also a _huge_ diversity of folks that might fit under a "developer" umbrella, if we're making it verrrry broad.

Yes, possibly technically correct, but I don’t consider it to be the same kind of 4GL I was talking about :)

An (overdue, IMO) renaissance of 4GL-ish ideas seems to be underway on the Web. See airtable, coda.io, fieldbook, fusioo, ragic, and (so I’m told) the very recent version of quip.
