I don’t use a VPN, even on public WiFi, because I don’t use any unsecured protocols (except for occasional public HTTP). Am I being naïve?

Yes. Lots of Apps still do plain text contacts to the server. On public WiFi, I always use vpn. With imsi catchers, maybe even on 3G.

What are examples of those apps?

Yes; so someone spoofs my mail server’s or banks DNS entry, and my mail client and browser catch it due to the TLS cerfificate chain.

If you want to protect your privacy, including sites you visit, then I'd say it's useful.

Agreed: Privacy concerns might be a good reason to use a VPN.
TLS Man in the Middle attacks. Most apps won’t complain about injected certificates.

An app that doesn’t complain about invalid certificates has no business running on my machine
