Surely everyone agrees there is absolutely no reasonable excuse for a news site to use client-side rendering for its main content. Right?

Json apis are way more reliable then constantly changing HTML that. the key names in that data should be enough semantics for news content.

Sadly true, but doesn't have to be. In an ideal world, HTML would be treated as an API, only with even more scrutiny

But to get the same or more usefulness for SEO, you'd have to standardize keys and structure (as in schema.org)
