Surely everyone agrees there is absolutely no reasonable excuse for a news site to use client-side rendering for its main content. Right?

No. Why would it? JSON has zero semantics.

I, for one, have had this opinion for a decade or so :)

Json apis are way more reliable then constantly changing HTML that. the key names in that data should be enough semantics for news content.

Sadly true, but doesn't have to be. In an ideal world, HTML would be treated as an API, only with even more scrutiny

"Just" client side for sure not. SEO would suffer a lot in that case. I recall some are doing a mix, server-side pre-rendering & stuff.

Server-side for initial page load and client-side for additional views gives best performance. E.g. gatsbyjs.org @gatsbyjs
