HTTP is a very bad choice as a protocol for the lower layers of your application, e.g. as a JDBC replacement :)

Sure this I agree with. But the web arch was in part about turning all those various web servers and services into a uniform data source

The point is: if you don't significantly raise the abstraction level, you pay the cost of HTTP but don't get the benefits it promises.
