What annoys me is people agreeing with this, but also regularly saying "PHP sucks" etc.

I'd say he has a point. However, that does not mean we should stop thinking about concepts that make errors less likely.

It might be disguised disappointment. He is a hero in our field and now quite clearly wrong. That hurts I guess?
