Not what I suggest at all, no. I think it bears remembering that most of us were worse than we are today, and condescension rarely helps

then tell me how to protect minorities in a world of loudmouths.
2
I'm quite sure we agree on the goals. My point here is that we often alienate people who could be convinced, for unnecessary reasons.
2
by being overprotective towards those who abuse we alienate those who want to be included.
1
Of course that's a risk. I still think there's room for strong disagreement without aborting conversations completely

a levled discussion is one thing. A Gamergate level of racist/misogynyst screaming with ears shut is often the reality
1
I have zero tolerance for a typical gamer gate troll, clearly no discussion is useful there. Yet there are many more where it's different
1
you dodged it again. How do you deal with a gamergate level troll?
1
I block them. I don't invite them to anything. I uninvite them from anything I've mistakenly invited them to.
2
1
you and me aren't the targets of such people. It's a satisfying but useless gesture to block them from talking to you.
1
I thought you asked how I deal with them personally. In online and offline communities, I'm all for Codes of Conduct.

2
Codes of Conduct and enforcing them are what I've been talking about all along.
1
For me, this is not about my view on CoCs. It's about how to treat e.g. people who think a CoC is a waste of time
1
a Code of Conduct (=social rule) needs a way of being enforced, otherwise it's worthless.
