Good point. I just saw a case of someone creating epubs to display them in the browser, despite owning the source
ebooks in the browser, starting from the assumption that you have #EPUB resources on the web. no way around something like this...

but I see pages, two next to each other, which makes no sense at all on my device. But I guess we agree: the simpler Web would be preferable
