The hyperlinking of text/html, text/stylesheet, image/*, audio/*, video/*, application/* is what makes the web browser work.

At least that's how the web works until it is broken by the abuse of javascript.

I don't agree that it's broken by JS. Media types are allowed to require clients to perform well-specified processing steps.

I'm not suggesting all use of JavaScript breaks the web. Just that it can and does happen.
