Valid point, allowing for experimentation and variation is a great goal. But interop is a nice goal, too.

Or better put, the problems from fragmentation are outweighed by the benefits of flexible dialects, in real world use.

My years-long observation is that the mild fragmentation in Markdown dialects hasn’t caused significant problems.
