Someone asked me about this today. Time to get real: it is extremely rare to get any pay for giving a tech conf talk unless you're a STAR.

I only speak at tech confs that cover travel/lodging. Still there are always misc uncovered expenses. Want to speak? Plan to be in the red.

Some tech confs sometimes pay workshop instructors. If you want to return from a tech conf in the black, that's the most realistic route.

I've read literally hundreds of CFPs. Can count on one hand the # of times they mentioned pay for workshops. Ask. It's the only way to know.

@cczona There is def a "don't ask, don't get" policy in most cases (with a good motivation, but too nuanced for me to say in 140).

@peterc. Which I object to, b/c ppl who have the network (read: privilege) hear such secrets, while noobs & less privd are held back by not.

@cczona That's true, and why I think it's great that speakers share as many insider tips about conference speaking as possible - like this.

@peterc thing is, diversity req's equal access. As long as tip=insider, ppl w/access to insiders have advantage. Transparency widens pools.
