I wonder: Are there well-known, profitable Open Source companies? I’m not talking about billion dollar acquisitions, but operating profits.

@stilkov RedHat has been the poster boy for that idea. I don't know their current state.
@stilkov I think it is mostly a combination of OSS stack and consultancy aka prof. support. @itemis, @camundaBPM are examples of the model.
@stilkov maybe @sensiolabs (symfony PHP framework's editor) but it depends on what do you mean by well-known
@stilkov RH may be at the top of the list but it comes with its own traps.
