Why would an *actual* meritocracy ever be or have been an antipattern? Isn't this what we all strive for?

Nope. It was invented as a satire. Problem is, "merit" is defined and measured by the people in power.

I'd suspect that you'd need to be able to find an objective measure of "merit" first, which could be problematic.

Sure, but that's typical for any set of useful community guidelines. Still, making clear what's valued seems right to me.

the merit in meritocracy stands for “I approve”, so it often reinforces biases like privilege, sexism, agism etc
