Thanks for the Alt+u suggestion, slows me down too much. Or do you get used to that after a while?

I've had a US keyboard for years, but haven't used the Opt-u method. Anyway, I've solved my problem.

I got used to that after a short while. One key less for curly braces and stuff, one key more for umlauts. Good deal, IMO.

Yes, you definitely will get used to it I don't recognize it anymore and even type it on German keyboards now.

I got used to it, except on the terminal (where left alt is something completely different).
