Why? IMHO encryption by default would be a really nice feature. Why wouldn't you want it (except for higher HW requirements)?

Apart from the architectural weirdness in implementation, there are lots of occasions where intermediaries make sense

what many people do not see is that the ssl trick prevents proxies to break spdy traffic, like they did with http 1.1 pipelining

I don't! Too many unencrypted connections out there and today performance is not THAT big a deal. Whats the argument against it?
