It is sadly true. For the internet as a all, because decentralisation is needed for its own survival. That's said, I see one counter-example to the list provided by Moxie: Bitcoin. It is decentralised, but since its development is centralised. They do arrive to make it evolve.

Good point. When was the last meaningful change regarding SMTP, POP or IMAP? 🤔 I guess those are the widest adopted federated protocols.
