How do real people / grown ups do food planning? It can't be "what shall we eat tonight?" every day 30 minutes before we're supposed to eat, like we do.

And it can't be these apps, because a) our parents never had these apps and b) who has time to add recipes for every meal they like?

Subtle but important: a limited repertoire. More focus on fewer dishes means you're more likely to have ingredients on hand for those. In turn, that means less planning for specific meals.

+1, the wife and I each have a set of “standard” dishes. Also, we typically plan a few hours ahead, not 30 minutes ;)

It's been on my mind. My spice drawer has overflowed because I like to cook a vast variety of dishes. Was thinking back to my childhood where we had a dozen or so spices.
