Stupidly, I gave in to using #WhatsApp a while ago. Luckily, I’m not dependent on it. I’ll switch to @signalapp, which is quite awesome both technically as well as from the business model perspective, and try to convince as many people as possible to do so, too

Cool. Do you know of any factsheet page which helps to show people what the problem with using #WhatsApp is?

It’s a non-profit organization financed by donations

Similar here. I've been using @signalapp and @ThreemaApp all along, but eventually also got "dragged" into some WhatsApp group. Not intending to accept the new ToS, I told everyone they can find me on Signal and deleted the WhatsApp account yesterday.

I resisted, everyone hated me for it.

When I moved many years ago, I lost contact with a whole bunch of folks that didn't care about privacy.

I'm in the middle of the 'migration process' to Signal which is basically a vicious circle due to the network effect you already mentioned. People are always arguing that that 'all the others' are using WhatsApp. No one wants to be the first related to a specific social cohort.

Good luck with that. With all school and Sport Club for children parents being in groups on WhatsApp is literally impossible. I so much prefer signal and telegram.

Same here wrt WhatsApp, just finding Signal almost as bad (except of course for the privacy/Facebook concerns)
