I’ve only played with it for a few minutes, and skimming a few articles can hardly be called research, but it seems to me #Telegram has practically been engineered to not only provide secure messaging, but also be a perfect platform for extremists. Am I wrong?

I don't know about #Telegram's goals, but if I developed a really secure system with end-to-end encryption than it is safe for me as well as for any bad actor because in really secure systems the service provider would have no way to read (and thus filter) any messages.

My problem with Telegram is not its (somewhat mediocre) end-to-end encryption support (see heise.de/hintergrund/Telegra…), rather the way it enables one-to-many broadcast and doesn’t give a flying fuck about the kind of content it’s used for

Telegram is used a lot by the german Pokémon Go Community because of the Broadcast/Chatbot Features

Bots are really a sweet spot with Telegram. I also moved all my (CI) notifications there. Don’t use it for much else.

100% agreement from my side

Maybe. Don't know if this was by intention. But this this mean that it shouldn't be used as "normal" messenger? I guess lots of these features are also helpful in countries where you don't have freedom of speech, aren't they?

I'm not sure if I fully agree, but they do give the well-known "zero fucks", which I think is the worst thing to do over time.

At least that's what it's used for

I'd even disagree with the secure messaging part. Since they use a proprietary server protocol nobody knows whether it's actually secure or not. In that regard I don't understand why people prefer Telegram over Signal.

Telegram is one of the few means of communication that still work in countries lacking the freedom of speech. Some governments will consider a person an extremist for saying out loud actual facts.
