Skimming the paper, they're not arguing that the computer can detect if someone is trustworthy, they're arguing they can detect is something is *perceived* as trustworthy.

If so, why couldn’t the author be bothered to mention that in what feels like a hundred tweets?

He does? He talks about replicating biases that humans have, and also he's a small account with 1200 followers who were mostly other academics and was not expecting to becoming the main character of Twitter today

Also, the paper is called "Social attributions from faces bias human choices"
