I think most of the articles that advocate for buy vs. build actually offer quite bad advice, and dramatically downplay the disadvantages

They always remind me of hbr.org/2003/05/it-doesnt-ma… – a piece I consider to be the worst IT advice ever (and a favorite of mine to illustrate that very smart people are sometimes very wrong)

The author was right in one point: IT, as it was in a typical enterprise of the year 2003, was a commodity b/c an enterprise was still a bunch of people supported by computers. Today, an enterprise is a system of apps, supported by a bunch of people.

I considered this article to be wrong for all the right reasons The comparison with electricity is IMHO quite fitting (as far as I remember) Companies which highly dependency on electricity (e.g steel, car factories, ...) commonly have their own power plants.
