I think that Elon Musk is (sometimes) great. I also think he’s (way too often) an asshole and (occasionally) incredibly stupid. Weird. It’s almost as if people are complicated and can be multiple different things at once. Admiring might be just as wrong as hating them, maybe?

A fair point of view but tell this to his worshippers and you'll see how fanatics behave. He is an absolutely brilliant mind but that doesn't stop him doing stupid things.

Can't we just admire aspects of a personality while disapproving others? IMHO we are getting too one-dimensional in public discussions. People and relationships are much more complicated than this.

What about this: nitter.vloup.ch/ggreenwald/statu… He can be intelligent but at the end of the day he is a fascist.
When I interviewed Evo Morales in Mexico City last December - the month after he was forced under threats to leave Bolivia - he was very clear that he regarded what happened as what he called “a Lithium Coup.” It’s good Elon Musk is admitting this: theintercept.com/2019/12/16/…

It's okay to admire people. Everyone has faults. It seems silly that an adult should have to be reminded of this.

i remind myself that the verb "to-be/is-a" tends to screw up simple thoughts. better to focus on the actions. Elon Musk (sometimes) does great things. Also, (way too often) he acts like an asshole and does incredibly stupid things. of course, scale/amplification matters, too.

Apparently, one kinda needs to be an asshole at times and suck at other things to be great at one thing. Balance must be kept.

Just “sometimes great”? I find this claim odd. Evidence suggests that he is great most of the time, given that Tesla and SpaceX are commonly recognized as revolutionary companies. I’m curious about the datapoints you used to derive these conclusions. Are you able to share any?

He has his weird and arrogant moments. But "(sometimes) great" is a broad understatement. I am careful with the term "disruptive" but his businesses deserve it. SpaceX and Tesla are in a different class ATM
