German friends! Does the English word “leader” have any sinister connotations culturally?

I'm not German, do not speak German, my native language is French, but despite this, that's the first thing I think about when I see the term "leader". Maybe I'm an exception, but my point is that leader is far from being, for me at least, culturally transparent.

No, none at all. The German literal translation “Führer“, in contrast, very much has, and is rarely used. (We’ll typically use “Anführer” instead.)
