Can you name a significant new technology class that started out life as open source? Linux "copied" unix, k8s "copied" Omega, etc. Was there a new category of technology that came out of open source from the get-go?

Acceptable answer! I'd quibble that it is non-central open source since its birth was not really a part of a collaborative effort but more like a white paper and reference implementation coming "literally" out of nowhere, but it helps me advance my thought process.

I guess the crypto space has a unique incentive to go open source as verifiability is a big part of the value of a proposal. Are there other innovations in the same general area that have started out as open source?
