My response to Apple re: their continuing rejections of HEY. The discussion has revolved around money, but this is not about money - it’s about choice, and it’s about how we want to take care of our own customers. This is important: hey.com/apple/iap/

I’m wondering: What would you lose if you didn’t have an iOS app? What features do you need that a PWA couldn’t provide? /cc @dhh

HEY is already a web app, works very well. Try it in mobile Safari.

Yes, I know. So why is the iOS app so important? It’s an honest question. Why bother with the whole control freak process at all?

People will not go to safari to check their mail. Not a chance.
Web apps are a second class citizen on iOS. Many tried otherwise, some went hybrid. Almost all are going back to native code (Facebook, Airbnb). iOS is a great platform for apps, but the policies need updating.

Product people care about details.
HEY deemphasizes them, but push notifications are still a big deal for an Email service.

I guess it’s the choice. There are people prefer using native app compare to PWA, deeper integration with the system.

If the app is not listed in the AppStore then it will not be easily discovered (or sometimes ranked/featured), you may lose a lot of potential users because of that. Focusing merely on functionality is justifiable if you are not trying to acquire more users which is not the case
