In the US, the police use military titles (sergeant, lieutenant, captain). That was inherited from the UK, which decided to do that at a particular time. Do countries that aren't ex-UK colonies follow the same pattern?

Austria does (for higher ranks). Germany doesn’t – it has its own rank system that has a roughly 1:1 mapping.
