One of my main problems with Slack (as opposed to email) is that I can’t seem to find a reasonable way to deal with messages later. The reminder approach doesn’t do it for me at all. How do you handle todos?

Try starring them. Not ideal.

my way of handling this issue: * sometimes i mark the question unread (if i just want to delay answering a bit) * sometimes i create an entry on my todo list * usually i accept that i may forget the message and tell people to use email if the question is important for them

I use a GTD Tool Nirvana to track all ToDos. I copy over the massage so I can find the context later by a simple search.

I simply use Microsofts To-Do app. It has just enough features i really need including subtasks. It's available and auto-updating on every device I have (windows/android) and can be used with different users per list. No unnecessary bs. Just overview and focus centered.

For me this was solved most of the times by not handling Slack as an email replacement but as a chat with ephemeral messages. I also cannot hold onto words in spoken discussions. Slack stresses me a lot more, if I try to hold onto messages.

On a spectrum of synchronous <-------> asynchronous communication, slack is more on the left side than email. It is more "elusive". In my company we use it for ad-hoc coordination. As soon as information is exchanged that is important or persistant, we change to email or Yammer.
