I don’t see how they could do much better if they want to exploit new hardware capabilities. I don’t think it would be a good move to never do any incompatible change

Customer-oriented solution: If the new hardware is so much more powerful, then integrate a downward compatible op mode for easy local integration, offer new features without deprecating old ones, offer lifetime security updates and bugfixes, stop integrating kill switches.
I hate to suggest this, but in future we will rent the equipment rather than buy it outright. Everything becomes a subscription.
