Why does the term “elopement” exist in English, but not in many other languages (including German)?

Interesting one! :-o Two thoughts: 1) Is "durchbrennen" for you not the equivalent term? (at least it's much broader, which I don't find too unusual, though) 2) Wiktionary seems to suggest that "elope" has the same Germany origin as "entlaufen". Love it en.wiktionary.org/wiki/elope

Could suggest 2 things: British need a more specific word, because of they apply it more often ;-) Other cultures need a more ambiguous word because there's more shame (maybe religiously)
