Why does the term “elopement” exist in English, but not in many other languages (including German)?

Interesting one! :-o Two thoughts: 1) Is "durchbrennen" for you not the equivalent term? (at least it's much broader, which I don't find too unusual, though) 2) Wiktionary seems to suggest that "elope" has the same Germany origin as "entlaufen". Love it en.wiktionary.org/wiki/elope

"elope" ist ziemlich genau "durchbrennen" "elopement" ist mithin "Durchgebrannt sein" und für das Bild von zwei, die miteinander durchgebrannt sind, um irgendwo im Stillen zu heiraten, passt das auch im Deutschen.
