Dear speaker: If I see you mention that you “write a talk”, my assumption is you will read it instead of presenting, which means you’ll bore your audience to death.

I like writing a slide deck that can be used to look up information later (as a reference). I agree that it shouldn’t be read to the audience, but I also don’t like slide decks that have only pictures and no information.

Both are very valid, but very different purposes. You could e.g. skip all the text slides while presenting, but include them in the handout/published PDF. Or simply put all the text in the speaker notes and publish them.

I personally have a horrible audio retention rate (I forget things almost as soon as I hear them). As a participant, I also prefer text slides because without the visual information, my mind wanders and I don’t get much.
