Only one problem with this idea: Twitter subscriptions would plummet to 10% of their current numbers. Let’s face it, Twitter-peeps want to freeload on the free service. “Pay? Who does that?!? This is the Internet!”

It could be a multi-tier system. Even a fraction of its user base paying could generate significant money. And in a sane world, that would be more than sufficient to operate Twitter, although probably not to create the kind of return its investors are expecting.

am pretty sure that's the reason why neither facebook nor twitter introduce a subscription model. even with a large percentage of current users subscribing, ad revenues are so much more lucrative

Plus, why should he change anything? For him and their investors, it works as it is now. Not until they feel any pain from their choices will they change any of them.
