Never did CORBA, but did do DCOM. SOAP shared similar design problems, which might not be surprising given Don Box worked on both. At Morgan Stanley we were explicitly told only to use SOAP as a message envelope otherwise we would be fired :-)

Doing J2EE, 2-phase commit or talking directly to MQ brokers were also fireable offences.

I was exaggerating, but only a little. Was actually a very impressive IT setup that had devOps and self-provisioning of services in early 2000s before these were widespread. I could get a personal DB for dev in a few minutes.
