Look at your web application and consider how much actual information you actually see at any one point in time. Then explain to me why you need to transfer more than a few dozen or maybe a hundred kB to achieve this goal.

Let alone web apps, I see even mobile apps, with only text content, transferring this kind of data.

Look at how query tuning is done, and apply that technique to tuning a (web) application, change rowsources for application layers.

My guess is: the reason of much larger transfers is in an attempt to have a rich client/browser capability for scripting, which requires uploading a lot of unnecessary data. If we have a lot of memory on client side now, why do not use it? Simple-stupid. A need in Architects!
