Of all the companies that might reasonably have bought GitHub, I think Microsoft is among those I like best. Definitely better than Google, Facebook, Oracle, IBM, or even, say, RedHat or Pivotal IMO. Still, I would have preferred if they’d remained independent.

Besides being a well known company... @pivotal and even @RedHat do not have the money for a deal like this. This is out of their league... by far.

Pivotal definitely not, sure. Red Hat, possibly.

I’m =0; there was also AWS to think of. MSFT have a long history of developer support & are busy with OSS Hadoop & Azure integration

Thought so too. Especially Oracle would have been... not that great.

IMO then staying independent was a very unlikely given their Cashflow situation. Transformation into a foundation unlikely given VC involvement.

I agree. Many of us grew up with Microsoft trying to achieve world domination with a rather mediocre OS they called windows. But nowadays I think that Java as a language could learn a lot from C# and I am also a huge fan of typescript (if you compare with Googles GWT)
