This is a recent favorite:

At one point @samfbiddle told me that IBM claimed to have a technical document explaining how their system worked, and it (in all apparent seriousness) proposed this diagram as a “system architecture” or something. I nearly blew milk out of my nose.

Those are the prettiest boxes I’ve ever seen in an architecture diagram, though

Reminds me of one system I reviewed that had a separated, decentralized subsystem called “ordertaker”. Even when everything else broke down, this was the one thing that kept running no matter what

Turning off video and muting yourself *is* more polite than just walking out of a room or closing the door in someone’s face, agreed

Maybe it should be called “Disturb mode” and you should have to switch it on explicitly

Luckily for you, your country (like mine) is one of those where that trust is an actual viable alternative

I did (a while ago). None of the PoW alternatives, including PoS, have proven themselves to be a viable alternative yet, AFAICT. I do have hopes that they will

(Of course many people I respect have been saying that for a long time, but I still think the approach itself is worthwhile in principle and too easily dismissed. The enthusiasts have failed to actually prove them wrong in case of this particular application so far, though.)

Still quite sure that a global-scale monetary system based on a PoW #blockchain would be worth the energy cost. I’ve held on to hope for quite some time, but as of now, #Bitcoin hasn’t reached that goal, nor is it close to doing so. I’m ready to declare that experiment a failure.

PSA: An amazingly efficient way to improve your quality of life is to turn on “Do not disturb” mode and then forget that you did

I think a good analogy would be a discussion about when to use PUT vs POST vs PATCH

I still like the SOLID principles. Except for the acronym, the exaggerated importance they’re assigned and the fact that they’re not really principles. It’s a bit like microservices – I like them a lot, especially if they’re neither micro nor services.
I wrote a thing about how I still don't agree with SOLID. I have an alternative formulation but before I get to that I wanted to explain why. dannorth.net/2021/03/16/cupi…
