I don’t think we disagree. I completely agree it’s preferable from a speaker’s perspective and it helps diversity.

They fear that more people will ask for reimbursement if they actively offer it. Admittedly I’m not sure this is a reasonable view.

Of course. But from an organizer perspective, quite a few people will cover their own travel cost (or have their company do it).

I know many organizers who offer to pay for travel, a fee, or both if asked to, but don't actively advertise it.
