I don’t think we disagree. I completely agree it’s preferable from a speaker’s perspective and it helps diversity.

Of course. But from an organizer perspective, quite a few people will cover their own travel cost (or have their company do it).

I'm not suggesting that's great, but it's better than not paying at all, let alone asking speakers to buy a ticket
I know many organizers who offer to pay for travel, a fee, or both if asked to, but don't actively advertise it.

Conferences, please list up front how you handle compensation before asking a person to respond to CFP.
