@nbartlett @alexkli Or phrased differently, I can see the benefits for “system” software, but prefer other approaches for business apps
@nbartlett @alexkli I don’t know for sure yet, but the likely answer is yes – with the exception of the JRE itself.
@nbartlett @alexkli Not sure we’re going to turn this into something productive here on Twitter. We know we disagree, right?
@nbartlett @alexkli I don’t want each codebase to become large enough to merit using OSGi. I understand YMMV.

@alexkli @nbartlett Nice try ;-) I believe in more separation than can be provided with things running in a single environment and process.

@nbartlett @alexkli Other than that, I don’t question it’s a great implementation. But it implements something I don’t believe in.

@nbartlett @alexkli It’s been a long time, admittedly. Can’t say reports from my coworkers from real-world projects make me change my mind.

@codepo8 Lets not beat this to death, but that doesn’t sound different from Chrome or Safari’s extension API.

@codepo8 Did Apple? My understanding was ad blocking is provided by 3rd party apps that use the new APIs – is that a misconception?

@codepo8 Given that there are tons of ad blockers for Chrome, how is Google not doing the same as Apple already?

@bodil Dont worry, you’ll always be able to bring your own laptop to work, too. You just won’t be allowed to connect it to the network :-)

@bodil Just hope it has a few cores left to handle the virus scanner and mandatory update scripts devised by central IT.

@alexkli I much prefer an architecture with separate systems running in their own processes.

@alexkli That’s the use case I’m not convinced it’s good for, unless you have a plugin structure (like in Eclipse or OpenHAB).
1
@alexkli With the exception of middleware-like software that requires plug-ins replaceable at runtime, I remain unconvinced it’s worth it

@alexkli I guess we have to agree to disagree – you won’t convince me of OSGi’s benefits for general purpose software anytime soon.

@alexkli @patrickmcfadin Likely something a lot less than 50% would agree with ;-)
