China does "deep packet inspection" along with DNS blocking etc, so I'd assume yes. HTTPS matters if using VPN outside of China though

yep and if you default to https you probably wont getindexed by baidu, qihoo or sogou. they index unblocked http-sites only :/

Yes. Why would it be any different? HTTP/S still has address headers, the content is encrypted not the headers. VPN is different.

Yes, but VPNing or SSH-tunnelling out is easy. The Great Firewall is there to funnel people into the local, controlled social media.
