the crazy thing to me is that the DoD hadn't insisted on paying spacex for starlink service in ukraine in the first place very sure other defense contractors get paid much more for much less value the people who want to make elon out to be the bad guy here just want attention

Well, you don't see the CEOs from other companies out grandstanding. It's "here's our product, here's what it costs" and carry on with their business. It's Musk who wants to make everything about him, feed the cult, take the credit. If you wanna sell a product, just sell it.
