surprising trend: for years it felt like a substantial fraction of the most impressive tech founders were under 28 or so. in the past few years, very few of them are. what changed?

Some reasons: 1. Eco-anxiety 2. Instant gratification 3. Inattention 4. Helicopter parenting 5. Being educated out of creativity (in the words of late Sir Ken Robinson) 6. And finally….where’s the time to get bored when you are doomscrolling all day…🤔

Nothing changed. Maybe you need to review the SV YC orthodoxy that no good ideas ever come from someone older than 30.

The generation which grew up with the Internet got older.

It’s who got investment - VCs were overwhelmingly investing in the young, stanfordish entrepreneurs. Now the finding seems a bit more in line with cash generation & customer acquisition

You got older, that’s it. The most impressive founders were never 28 — you were just 28.

the economy has shifted slightly towards rent-seeking behavior in that time, and older people are better at rent-seeking

What I see is that young people miss the drive to research. Give unknown soft/hardware and they ask how it works and without teaching, quit. While before, people investigated, trial/error learned, come up with new stuff. Its now getting entertained instead of entertain yourself.

1. Digital tech is saturated in many ways, yet many universities still focus on software engineering due to shortages (that is about to flip). 2. If you look at carbon capture tech, etc, you see lots of young people dominating.
